Broward College to Award $200,000 for MLK Day of Service

Now accepting applications for volunteer projects that honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (October 6, 2015) –Broward College, in partnership with the 2016 MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has been awarded $200,000 from the Florida Legislature to fund community volunteer projects that aim to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy and transform Monday, Jan. 18 into a day of volunteerism in the local community. Broward College is now accepting applications from nonprofits, volunteer groups, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, governments, civic and service organizations, churches and other community groups, and will award up to $5,000 to support projects honoring the MLK Day of Service. Applications are being accepted through Friday, Oct. 30. To apply, visit http://www.broward.edu/MLKservice.

“Once again, Broward College is honored to serve the community this year by providing special funding for these important MLK Day of Service projects,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “These volunteer projects offer opportunities for sustained service and ongoing community involvement. We’ll be distributing more awards this year, and look forward to seeing truly unique and creative projects.”

Last year, the Broward College MLK Day of Service Awards were offered to community groups to develop service projects that positively impacted the local area. Awards were intended to encourage service projects that address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, disaster preparedness, veterans and military family issues, public safety or neighborhood projects. A total of 24 awards were issued to 20 organizations, totaling $96,406.
