Broward College Hosts First Student 'Hackathon,' Oct. 16-17

Local college students to participate in 24-hour coding challenge        

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (October 1, 2015) – To provide the opportunity for local college students, regardless of their major or prior computer programming experience, to collaborate and work together on various coding projects, Broward College will host its first 24-hour Hackathon. A team of local technology leaders will serve as judges, providing feedback on team presentations. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, beginning at 6 p.m. at Broward College’s A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie, Bldg. 13. Only students are invited to participate in the challenge; however, the public is invited to the final presentations on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. To attend the presentations or awards ceremony, register at http://bchackathon.com.

“Hackathons are becoming popular throughout the country because they address the persistent technology talent gap issue, as well as allow people from different backgrounds to work together, and come up with new ideas and solutions to issues they may care about,” said Broward College Professor of Computer Science Michelle Levine, co-organizer of the event. “Our goal is to create a really inclusive environment that inspires idea sharing, and also encourages and develops the student talent pool, which will, in turn, support the thriving technology sector in Broward County.”

Participants will include students from Broward College, Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University and other institutions located in Broward County. They will not be allowed to start any projects or write any code before the start time on Friday, Oct. 16. Then, after the final presentations, the students will retain ownership rights of their projects.
