Broward College to Celebrate National Library Week with Literary Fair 2016

Fort Lauderdale, FL (March 30, 2016) – In celebration of National Library Week, Broward College will host Literary Fair 2016, April 12-14 at the University/College Library on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. On all three days from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the event will feature a Community Fair that is open to the public.

First observed in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and celebrated by libraries across the country each April. According to Andrew Dutka, faculty librarian for archives and special collections at University/College Library, "This event is intended to provide students a platform to connect with books, interact with writers, and learn about the possibilities available to them through literature."

The Literary Fair at Broward College will have a South Florida focus, featuring local authors, some who are Broward College professors. Participants include:

• Adamari López Torres: Currently a host on the Telemundo morning show, Un Nuevo Día, the actress is known for participating in several Puerto Rican and Mexican soap operas.
• Joan Mickelson (pen name Michal Sherring): A retired museum curator, Joan has written an art museum mystery as Michal Sherring. A Hollywood, Florida native, Mickelson wrote a short history of Hollywood, and a biography of its founder, Joseph W. Young, Jr.
• Joanne Lewis: Lewis is an attorney-turned-novelist who writes murder mysteries, historical fiction, and historical fantasy, and is the author of several award-winning novels. Titles by Lewis include Forbidden Room (Book 1 of the Forbidden trilogy); Wicked Good, which she co-wrote with her sister; Make Your Own Luck, a Remy Summer Woods Mystery; The Lantern; and the Michelangelo & Me series.
• Kingsley Guy: Guy's fascination with ancient Egypt began in 1997, when he first saw the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the temples of the Nile while on assignment for South Florida's Sun-Sentinel newspaper. After years of studying ancient Egypt, which included on-site research, he transformed his journalistic skills to those of a novelist and created Queen of the Heavens. He currently is writing a second novel, also set in ancient Egypt.
• Louis K. Lowy:  A former firefighter, Lowy is the recipient of a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. He is an alumnus of FIU's creative writing program, and his work has appeared in New Plains Review, The MacGuffin Magazine, The Chaffey Review, and the anthology Everything Is Broken. His poem, "Poetry Workshop: Mary Had a Little Lamb" finished runner-up in the 2009 Winning Writers Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest. His first published novel, Die Laughing, is a humorously dark sci-fi adventure set in the 1950s. To Dream, book one of his science fiction drama, Anatomy of a Humachine, is scheduled for release in mid-2016.
• Marjetta Geerling: Geerling is the author of Fancy White Trash (Viking, 2008), a 2009 American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults and Rainbow List selection. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Broward College-Central Campus.
• Lourdes Rodriguez-Florido: Born in Havana, Cuba, Florido experienced a multicultural upbringing in Kansas City, Missouri and Miami, Florida. A former print journalist, she now is an English professor at Broward College and teaches themed composition courses and supernatural literature.  Florido has two published novels: A Whisper of Angels, a fantasy-romance, and White Trees, a young-adult novel set in South Florida.
