Broward College and Diversified Companies Announce Groundbreaking for New Aviation Facility

On Thursday, May 26, Broward College and Diversified Companies announced the groundbreaking for a new aviation facility at the North Perry Airport. Broward College will lease three hangars for its Aviation Maintenance Management Associate of Science program, and will house four classrooms, faculty offices, and shop space in its 13,500 square feet. The present facility used by Broward College is too small for student demand:  Currently there are 225 students in the program, and 150 on the waiting list. It is anticipated the new facility to be ready for spring 2017.

Aviation Maintenance Management Degree  

The Aviation Maintenance Management Associate of Science degree at Broward College provides students with the academic skills to complement their technical training. The plan of study complies with the Federal Aviation Regulations Part 147 for an approved aviation maintenance technician's school, and, in addition, offers the advantages of college level academic and management courses.

Students seeking an Associate of Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Management must complete the general requirements for both the Airframe Mechanics and Power Plan Mechanics diplomas and/or possess a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate.

Aviation Industry in Broward County

According to data from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, the aviation industry in Broward County is a multibillion-dollar sector, including airlines, general aviation, airports, airframes and engine manufacturers, component parts suppliers, and allied industries such as banking and insurance, and government agencies. Its hub is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which has an annual economic impact of more than $13.2 billion. Through the decades, the airport has grown into a major transportation complex that now provides more than 139,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Many companies in the aviation sector also are investing in Greater Fort Lauderdale. Turbine Controls, Inc. (TCI) expanded its aircraft engine component maintenance facility in Miramar, and GE Aviation moved to a larger facility in Pompano Beach to develop, test, and manufacture advanced electrical power conversion products. Brazil's Embraer, one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturers, added a new maintenance and overhaul facility to its North American headquarters, customer service and support complex in Fort Lauderdale to serve the executive jet and commercial jet sectors.
