Broward College Celebrates Spring 2016 Commencement

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (May 16, 2016) – On Tuesday, May 10, Broward College conferred nearly 3,000 degrees and certificates at its 84th commencement ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. These students joined more than 130,000 students who have graduated from Broward College since it was established in 1959.

"We congratulate all of our students for reaching a major milestone in their lives," said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. "Now it's time for our students to reach their potential either by continuing their education or entering the workforce prepared to make a difference in our community."

The keynote address was delivered by Madeline Pumariega, chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS). As chancellor, Pumariega oversees the education of more than 800,000 students at 28 colleges throughout the state. Her passion for higher education and student success long precedes her appointment at FCS; she has served as the president and chief executive officer of Take Stock in Children, a statewide non-profit organization that aims to help at-risk youth break the cycle of poverty by completing college; and president of the Wolfson Campus at Miami Dade College.

During the ceremony, Broward College Army ROTC cadet Alberto Jose Rodriguez-Sanchez was commissioned into the United Sates Army as a Second Lieutenant. Cadet Rodriguez-Sanchez has been selected as the distinguished military graduate for the Southern Strike Battalion, and was one of only 17 officers nationally selected for the United States Cyber Command.
