Broward College's Marielena DeSanctis Named 2016 Hispanic Woman of Distinction

Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment to be honored at luncheon on August 12

Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 6, 2016) – Broward College's Marielena DeSanctis, vice president of student affairs and enrollment, will be honored as one of 13 Hispanic Women of Distinction at a charity luncheon on August 12, 2016, at the Signature Grand in Davie.

Named Broward College's vice president of student affairs and enrollment in May 2014, DeSanctis directs and oversees a variety of departments and tasks, including the admissions and enrollment of students, student records, accessibility resources, student athletics and activities, and the accurate disbursement of approximately $148 million per year of student financial aid. She also serves as the college ombudsman for Title IX compliance and student advocacy. Starting in April of this year, DeSanctis also leads the Grants department, Institutional Research, Developmental Education, International Education, and Academic Affairs on an interim basis while the search for the Central Campus president is conducted.

Immediately prior to joining Broward College, DeSanctis was with the School Board of Broward County where she served as the Executive Director of curriculum, instruction and interventions. She also has experience as a school principal (Fort Lauderdale High School), an assistant principal (South Plantation High School), and a teacher of mathematics and physics (South Plantation High School).

Fluent in Spanish and English, DeSanctis earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology; a master's degree in math education from Nova Southeastern University; and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University. She is a mother of two children - Conner (21) is studying Petroleum Engineering at LSU, and Allie (18) will be a freshman at FSU this summer in the Pre-Med program. She is a resident of Lake Worth, Florida.
