Broward College Recognizes Six Outstanding Educators with $60,000 in Stipends

Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 9, 2016) – Broward College recently surprised six outstanding educators with the 2016 Broward College Foundation Endowed Teaching Chair Awards. This program, now in its 25th year, grants recipients a stipend of $10,000 for one year to provide for the professor's professional development, and projects to improve classroom excellence and efficiency.

"We truly value the dedication these faculty members have shown to our students, their passion for education, and their drive to make Broward College an elite academic institution," said J. David Armstrong, Jr., president of Broward College. "The awards will make it possible for these educators to continue their own professional development, which will translate into richer experiences for their students."

This year's grant recipients

  • Mariah ReedGaddis Corporation Endowed Teaching Chair – A professor of fine and applied arts at Central Campus, Professor Reed began teaching with the College in 2002 and previously was the recipient of the Blockbuster Endowed Teaching Chair in 2008.  
  • Dr. Vanessa HormannChildren's Opportunity Group Endowed Teaching Chair  Dr. Hormann is an assistant professor of biological science at North Campus.  She also was the Central Campus Professor of the Year for 2013-2014.
  • Kelly Walker, Presidential Endowed Teaching Chair  An instructor at North Campus since 2010, Walker is a professor of exceptional student education at North Campus.
  • Dr. Vijay Parkash, Waste Management Endowed Teaching Chair – An assistant professor in the biology/physical science department at South Campus, Dr. Parkash is a faculty mentor currently mentoring four adjuncts who teach anatomy and biology. She also shares best practices and resources on how to best integrate technologies in the classroom. 
  • Dr. Edward Cornejo, SunTrust Bank Endowed Teaching Chair – In addition to being an assistant professor of history, behavior, and political science at South Campus, Dr. Cornejo is the founding advisor of Club Clio, a student-led organization focused on public speaking and development of soft skills.
  • James Martin, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Endowed Teaching Chair – An assistant professor of English/journalism at South Campus, Professor Martin has contributed much of his time to the Seahawk Support program, a program which identifies struggling students and refers them to Student Success.
