Message From President Armstrong Regarding Events in Orlando

Dear Broward College Students, Faculty and Staff,

This weekend’s horrific act of violence and hate reminds us that we have an obligation and responsibility as educators to teach and model compassion and respect for all. Respect includes a love for one another as human beings regardless of sexual preference, nationality, religion, race, ethnicity and political opinions, all of which are protected by the U.S. Constitution. Let us also remember that respect and love for all humans is embodied in the values and teachings in each of the world’s major religions.

As one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the world, Broward College supports and respects all students, faculty and employees. We will continue to lead, teach and model respect and compassion for all members of our community, including our vibrant LGBT community, religious community, and our diverse student body representing a broad spectrum of nationalities and ethnicities.

While our robust first amendment rights of freedom of speech and opinion are not to be taken lightly, we will not tolerate violence, acts of bullying or intimidation, and we will be vigilant in our campus safety and security to ensure we have a safe and respectful atmosphere for students and employees. As we struggle with the terror in Orlando, I ask you to join us in doubling our efforts to keep this community safe for learning.

Our thoughts and prayers for peace are with the survivors and families of the victims, and we proudly stand with Orlando. Out of respect for those affected, and to show our commitment to peace, Broward College will be flying our flags at half-staff.

Students who have been affected by the events of this weekend may contact our partners at Henderson Behavioral Health to find support and healing: 954-424-6916. Faculty and employees may contact our Employee Assistance Program: 888-371-1125.

With peace and the hope for a safer future for all,

President J. David Armstrong, Jr.
