Broward College Is Now Accepting Applications For MLK Day Of Service

Selected organizations will be awarded a total of $112,500

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Monday, September 26, 2016) – Through funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has received $112,500 that it will allocate to a variety of community organizations to develop and complete service projects between January 9 - January 16, 2017. MLK Day of Service encourages the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy.

Interested organizations are encouraged to submit applications to the Broward College website, detailing how their proposed projects will enhance or impact the Broward County community. The selected organizations will be eligible to receive awards up to $3,500 in funding to directly support their proposed service projects.  Applications are due by 12 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016.

“The Broward College mission is to use moments both in- and outside the classroom to educate, and community service projects provide enriching opportunities to learn about the community and its citizens,” said J. David Armstrong, Jr., Broward College president. “It is important that we lead the way in hometown activism by encouraging volunteerism and service within our community, and we are eager to begin receiving proposals for MLK Day of Service projects for 2017.”

The MLK Day of Service awards are intended to encourage service projects which address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families’ issues, public safety or neighborhood projects. Last year, a total of 1,582 volunteers registered for projects through the Broward College MLK Day of Service that included packing homeless survival kits, planting health gardens, creating affordable housing, revitalizing community buildings, and organizing food drives to assist veterans, among others.

Eligible applicants include: non-profits, volunteer groups, K-12 schools, colleges/universities, government organizations, Greek/civic/service organizations, churches, neighborhood organizations, professional associations and for-profit businesses. All participating organizations and service projects must be located in Broward County.
