Renowned educator Dr. Steve Perry serves as keynote speaker for the Future Leaders Success
Conference 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 17 inside the Omni Auditorium on Broward College North Campus in Coconut Creek. The event will examine ways to motivate, educate and empower minority male leaders in South Florida. Perry has lent his insight as contributor for CNN and NBC, Essence Magazine columnist and best-selling author of “Push Has Come to Shove: Getting Our Kids the Education They Deserve Even if it Means Picking a Fight.” A forum will be hosted with college, high school and middle school educators on priorities and solutions for increasing student engagement and degree completion. “Girls and Guns” Art Exhibit

“Girls and Guns” features the work of Nancy Floyd, Susan Graham, and Felice House. This exhibition explores relationships between women and firearms, subverting the notion of expected gender roles. Floyd’s videos and photographs are intimate portraits of elite female competition shooters, Graham’s porcelain guns are lacy and delicate in contrast to their potentially violent counterparts, and House’s paintings replace the male heroes of Western film with strong female figures. Indian Classical Music Lecture-Demonstration

Renowned Indian classical artists will discuss the history, instruments and structure of Indian music, as well as its heritage to the world of music. The presentation features Krishna Mohan Bhatt on sitar, accompanied by Nitin Mitta on table; and Saraswathi Ranganathan on veena, accompanied by Ganapathi Ranganathan on Mridangam. Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the event is followed by a concert at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 10 at the Broward Library Main Auditorium. As part of the programming for the Broward College South Campus Office of Cultural Affairs (BSOCA series), Broward College welcomes Elena Maria Garcia’s “Do You Speak Mexican?” and Chris Perez’s “Flying Lesson.” The two performers bring a personal collection of true childhood stories that, threaded together, defined each performer’s upbringing as first generation Cuban Americans. “6 Degrees: Tales of Immigration” Opening Reception

As part of the programming for the Broward College South Campus Office of Cultural Affairs (BSOCA) series, “6 Degrees: Tales of Immigration” features the work of emerging local artists Jayme Gershen and Jonathan de Camps. The exhibit aims to reveal the face of contemporary immigrants, dismantling preconceptions based on appearance and motivation to come to the United States. The exhibit is an attempt to spark conversations about identity, cultural heritage and acceptance. The exhibit runs through Wednesday, November 2. For more information, visit www.bsoca.com.

Safety Campus Days
The Department of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness will be hosting a series of “Campus Safety Days” to promote safety across the various Broward College campuses and throughout the local community.  In recognition of National Campus Safety Month, observed annually in September, organizers have partnered with Student Life to host several events featuring local law enforcement and fire rescue, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) trucks, interactive displays and demonstrations, giveaways, as well as a variety of health and safety organizations. Each event is free and open to the public.

Highlight of the Week: A Special Media Advisory
Broward College to Host Disney Institute for One-Day Seminar Titled “Transforming Your Organization – Disney’s Approach to Quality Service”

The one-day event will allow area professionals to examine how they can differentiate their service to become a provider of choice and understand the processes necessary to develop a culture that consistently delivers that exceptional service. This day of Disney Institute training uses business insights and time-tested examples from Disney parks and resorts worldwide to inspire individuals and organizations to enhance their own customer experience using Disney principles as their guide. The course is beneficial to any leader or employee interested in learning how service drives differentiation and how to design and deliver exceptional customer service as well as how to recover from a service failure. As part of the training, participants will receive training manuals/workbooks from the Disney Institute as well as a certificate of completion from the Disney Institute.
