Award-Winning Film Nuts Comes to Bailey Hall. Writer and co-editor Thom Stylinski is set to make a special appearance.

Davie, FL (October 24, 2016) –Bailey Hall presents the documentary NUTS! as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers on Thursday, November 10th at 7:30 p.m. Following the screening, writer and co-editor Thom Stylinski will engage the audience in a discussion about the film and his work.

NUTS! recounts the mostly-true story of John Romulus Brinkley, an eccentric Kansas doctor who claimed that he could cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles into men. Mixing animated reenactments, interviews, archival footage and a highly unreliable narrator, NUTS! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty to the heights of celebrity, wealth, and influence in Depression-era America.

The film has been awarded the 2016 Sundance U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing and has been named as the Official Selection of the 2016 International Film Festival in Rotterdam.

“NUTS! is a hip and quirky film that shows a creative twist on the American dream,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall. “We are very excited to bring this fun and comical documentary to Bailey Hall.”

Director Penny Lane, who also helmed the 2013 film-festival darling Our Nixon, developed the idea for NUTS! in 2009 after reading about Brinkley in the book Charlatan by Pope Brock. “I began to think about how much people want to believe in miracle cures. The weirder the better, really,” explains Lane. ”NUTS! is not a film that allows us to sit back and laugh at the dummies who fell for Brinkley, anyone could fall for anything. Brinkley is a person who knew that.”

The film serves as a reminder of how our love for compelling narrative is exactly what makes us so endlessly susceptible to being conned. Rolling Stone wrote, “As illuminating as it is immensely entertaining, Penny Lane's doc uses charming hand-crafted animation to trace how Brinkley ballooned a wacko epiphany into a vast media empire built on nothing but hot air.”  The film contains adult subject matter.

The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers is a program of South Arts. Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. South Arts, founded in 1975, is a nonprofit regional arts organization building on the South's unique heritage and enhancing the public value of the arts. Their work responds to the arts environment and cultural trends with a regional perspective, through an annual portfolio of activities designed to address the role of the arts in impacting the issues important to our region, and linking the South with the nation and the world through the arts. The film series continues with Shake ‘Em on Down (Feb. 16), Some Beasts (March 30) and Hunky Dory (April 20).
