Broward College Announces Three New Faculty-Led Study-Abroad Programs

Fort Lauderdale, Fla (November 7, 2016) – Broward College has announced three new study abroad locations for 2017, opening the door for travel to exotic destinations for immerse cultural experiences which broaden academic horizons. The new locations include an inaugural trip to Cuba, a dual tour of Japan and Singapore and an exploration of Canada. The programs will allow students to pursue courses in communication, photography, Spanish language, and business.

“Study abroad opportunities are integral to students as they prepare to compete in an increasingly globalized workforce—one which requires strong intercultural communication skills and global competency,” said Liz Vocasek, director of Study Abroad & Global Engagement at Broward College. “Taking a trip somewhere is a wonderful personal experience, and study abroad elevates travel and education by combining a community of learners with seasoned professors and study abroad professionals who support them in navigating and understanding the travel process, while translating their classroom experience into the real world,” she said.

The programs will give students an opportunity to travel internationally with two professors and receive up to six credits upon completion of the program. Trip durations span from one to two weeks and are open to students in all areas of study. Students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher and be at least 18 years of age.

Study abroad programs, while different in their academic goals, ascribe to the same mission of providing students with immersive, enlightening cultural experiences which enrich their understanding of the world:

Canada – This program will take students to Toronto for two weeks to enhance their understanding of culture and communication. Students will have the opportunity to visit Niagara Falls, Casa Loma, and enjoy the Danforth Festival.

Cuba –This one-week program combines coursework in Spanish language and digital photography. Participants will travel to Havana and Viñales to study the similarities and differences between the U.S. and Cuba while experiencing the island’s famous architecture, city life and small town charm.

Japan and Singapore – This 10-day program to Japan and Singapore will provide students the opportunity learn about the business management culture in Asia. Participants will visit insurance and financial institutions as well as cultural sites like temples and gardens.

In addition to the new summer locations, Honors College students will be completing a service-learning project in Brazil and science students will venture to the Peruvian Amazon to study zoology during spring break 2017.

  • Program fees range from $2,500 to $4,500, and cover the cost of international health insurance, airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, guided city tours, entrance fees and some meals, though does not include Broward College tuition or textbooks. Broward College degree-seeking students may be eligible to apply for the following grants and scholarships administered by the College:
    Faculty-Led Program Travel Grant – awards up to $1000 towards program fee for degree-seeking students
    Honors Grant for Study Abroad – awards up to $1500 to Honors College students
    Financial Aid Study Abroad Scholarship – available to degree-seeking financial aid recipients who have been accepted to participate in a faculty-led program
