Broward College Receives Chancellors Best Practice Award

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Friday, November 4, 2016) – The Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) presented Broward College with the “Chancellor’s Best Practice” award during the opening general session of the 67th Annual Meeting and Conference in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The award recognized Broward College for its work in using the current relationship with the Memorial Healthcare System as a model for building successful Corporate Alliance Partnerships (CAP). Madeline Pumariega, chancellor for the Florida College System, presented representatives of Broward College with the award on Wednesday, November 2.

“We are honored to have received this award on behalf of Broward College,” said J. David Armstrong, Jr., president of Broward College. “Our goal is to build mutually beneficial relationships with employers that will help us grow a stronger economic ecosystem by aligning students to employers, and bridging the skills gap with a work-ready pipeline of graduates.

CAP program was recognized for meeting and exceeding evaluation criteria

  • Providing a sustainable model for corporate partnerships by creating a rich, multi-layered agreement that is easily implemented with new businesses;
  • Setting new standards and introducing innovative practices by streamlining the corporate relationship process through the formation of a cross-functional team from key departments;
  • Improving efficiencies by utilizing a web-based client relationship management tool;
  • Reducing costs for the College by providing a new revenue stream to support ongoing student success and affordability initiatives; and
  • Offering benefits to educational practices by producing synergies between coursework and needed real-world skills.

“This low cost, high reward relationship building tool has revolutionized how Broward College approaches corporate training, continuing education, career services, internships and on-site enrollment services,” said Mildred Coyne, Executive Director Workforce Education & Economic Development. “We consider the CAP model just one of many ways the College continues to be community-minded. For us, it isn’t just a best practice, it’s the only practice.”

Starting with a simple agreement between a company and the College, the CAP program works to convert the budding relationship into a sustainable program which aligns the partner’s business needs with Broward College resources. Each CAP participant is assigned a liaison who helps create connections that leverage the expertise of various departments, including Enrollment Services to Broward College Career Centers. The result is a multifaceted program which offers student sponsorships, guaranteed employment, equipment donations, student coaches and new program development support for the College; and extensive continuing education training, dedicated enrollment liaisons, and a highly skilled workforce pipeline for the business.
