In Wake of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Shooting Event Celebrates South Florida's First-Responders

Broward College Hosts C.O.P.S. Fair to Strengthen Ties between Community and Law Enforcement

Davie, Fla (January 13, 2017) – C.O.P.S. (Community of Police and Students), a Broward College student organization which works to build a bridge between the community and law enforcement, organized a Fair in to pay tribute to the firefighters, paramedics, police and others who risk their lives to serve, protect, and save lives. The event coincided with Florida First Responder Appreciation Week, observed between January 9 and 13.

The day featured Davie Police with K-9, bike and mounted units, as well as vehicles from S.W.A.T. and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Booths were set up with information on how to join the Broward College Police Academy, how to become a police service aide and safety tips including what to do when you get pulled over. Fun activities such as water balloon toss and a dunk tank gave attendees a chance to interact with officers in a festive setting. Cadets and faculty from the Broward College Police Academy were also on hand to talk about their own experiences.

A highlight of the event saw high school debate students take the stage to tackle police-centric topics including the required level of education for officers and the use of body cameras.  Elementary and middle school students from Broward County Public Schools were among those in the audience who had an opportunity to ask questions. 

The Fair was a collaboration with Broward College departments of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Institute of Public Safety and Student Life.

“Since [the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport attack], the Fair became more than just bringing everyone together. It was about uniting with the people who put themselves on the front line; the first responders, who, even during the event, some were called away to an emergency,” said Dr. Lulrick Balzora, Associate Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “From the little kids in elementary school to our Broward College students, from the police officers to their trusty law enforcement animals, everyone played a part in making this event truly special.”
