FEATURED: Exploring the Red Planet with NASA Engineer Kobie Boykins

Kobie Boykins is a mechanical engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who worked on projects from Pathfinder and Mars Exploration Rovers to Ocean Surface Topography Mission for more than ten years. Currently, Boykins is supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing mast teams for Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory. His presentation will include dozens of breath-taking images of Mars, as well as personal reflections on the importance of success and failure in the process of scientific exploration.

Ring the Bell Management, in partnership with the Broward College South Campus Office of Cultural Affairs, presents “Words United.” The spoken word with international flavor will feature Asia Samson from the Asia Project, Made Son, Y. Yamazawa, and Sierra Demulder with local Veteran poetry troupe, the Combat Hippies. Broward College students Marnino Toussaint and Zoharian Williams also will participate. Tickets are $25. The South Florida Black Journalists Association and Lead Nation are hosting the inaugural Diversity Career Fair. The event will include companies from local television, radio, print and online media outlets who are looking to hire. The day will feature panels hosted by local talent, including Juwan Strader of NBC 6 and Felisha Monet from 99 JAMZ.

Early bird registration is $10, or $15 for day-of registration. The event is free for South Florida Black Journalists Association members and Broward College students (must provide school email and student identification.

Rastafarians refer to themselves as “I and I,” which speaks to their connection with the God and the “other.” Inspired by the song i by Kendrick Lamar, the core of “I and I: The Politics of Self-Love” focuses on self-acceptance and love of self as a revolutionary act through portraits of influential figures. "Space Apes" is a one-man show about an inmate re-entry program counselor speaking his mind on topics such as massive incarceration and the prison industrial complex, while exposing his relationship with bedeviled executives. The Haitian-born Jean-Baptiste grew up in Miami and attended the New World School of the Arts performing arts program. He has performed locally and was the subject of a short documentary produced by WLRN for the Miami International Film Festival. Tickets are $10 for the general public. Broward College Honored By Junior Achievement with a U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award
Junior Achievement USA® (JA) announced that it will honor Broward College with a Silver Level 2015-2016 U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award for providing at least 10,000 volunteer hours to local Junior Achievement offices during the 2015-2016 school year.
