Florida College System Names Eight Broward College Students to its 2017 All-Florida Academic Team

Pembroke Pines, Fla (February 20, 2017) – The Florida College System recently announced the 2017 All-Florida Academic Team, sponsored by USA Today and the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Eight Broward College students are among 127 scholars across the state who will be awarded for academic achievement, leadership and service to their communities.

Giveth Rocha, Robert Sekuloski, Michele Khadir, Mario Petrov, Quratulain Amin, Sana Amin, Chiara Cava and Jose Lopez were nominated based on recommendations from the Pi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) advisors at Broward College. The students then completed an application and provided transcripts and a letter of recommendation. Their submissions were reviewed by College deans prior to an interview by Broward College campus presidents. Quakish Williams Liner, district director for the Robert “Bob” Elmore Honors College, then forwarded the completed applications to the All-USA Academic Team competition for consideration.

“These students come from varying socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds with many overcoming a number of barriers to succeed. For example, Quratulain and Sana Amin are sisters from Dubai who I have watched excel and flourish at Broward College,” Liner said. “This is a phenomenal achievement, and its addition on their resumes can help open the door to other opportunities and scholarships.”

Last year, six students from Broward College were selected for the 2016 All-Florida Academic Team.

“I’m pleased to congratulate each of these high achieving students who earned a place on the All-Florida Academic Team,” said Madeline Pumariega, Division of Florida Colleges Chancellor. “Their academic achievements coupled with their dedication to leadership and service inside and outside the classroom serve as a model for Florida College System students across our great state of Florida. I look forward to celebrating their future successes as they pursue a career.”

The eight awardees will be recognized at an awards ceremony, hosted by the Florida College System, in Tallahassee on April 7 where they will be presented with a medallion. The College will celebrate the students during a luncheon in March.
