Real-time big-screen production is a theatrical, music and cinematic adaptation of a graphic novel by scratch DJ artist Kid Koala
Davie, Fla. (March 28, 2017) – In the highlight of its season, Bailey Hall presents Nufonia Must Fall – Live! a live multi-disciplinary adaptation of Kid Koala’s graphic novel of the same name, for two performances on Thursday and Friday, April 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Fifteen people make up the live production, which involves an amazing team of puppeteers, technicians and musicians who bring the characters to life amid miniature sets that have been built to recreate each scene from the book. Under the direction of Oscar-nominated production designer KK Barrett (Her, Where the Wild Things Are, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich), the performance is cinematically lit, filmed, and projected on a large screen.
Kid Koala, accompanied by the Afiara String Quartet, performs his original score on piano and turntable. All of the elements come together in real time in equal parts cinema, theater and musical concert.
The charming story tells of a lovable robot and a beautiful inventor who find each other. The New York Times reported, “Nufonia Must Fall plays as genuine romance.”
“This production from some of the most creative talents in music and film have put together a truly multi-disciplinary production to tell what is, at its heart, an old-fashioned love story and we are very excited to present it for two performances,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall.
Kid Koala is a world-renowned scratch DJ, music producer, and award winning graphic novelist. His unforgettable live shows range from silly touring turntable carnivals like Short Attention Span Theater (featuring turntable bingo) and Vinyl Vaudeville (including puppets and dancers) to quiet-time events like Music To Draw To and his Space Cadet Headphone Experience.
Of Nufonia Must Fall – Live! Koala writes in a program note, “One of my fondest memories from childhood was watching Charlie Chaplin films. I remember my whole family, kids, parents AND grandparents, huddled around the screen smiling and laughing along as the story unfolded. Since those days, something about the silent film format has always struck a chord with me. When I was writing Nufonia Must Fall, I always imagined the book being a kind of paperback silent movie...I hope that audiences will have as much fun watching the show as we have had putting it together!”
