Broward College Partnered with MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to Support Volunteer Projects Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (March 1, 2017) – Funding from the Florida Legislature allowed Broward College and the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to support 36 community organizations that hosted volunteer projects in Broward County on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Among the participating organizations were YMCA of South Florida in Weston, Deerfield Beach Middle School, Sunshine Heart Mentoring Program and Broward College South Campus Service Learning.

More than 3,100 volunteers registered for projects, a 15 percent increase from 2016, and logged 16,045 hours of service. Volunteers included community members, Broward College students, faculty and staff. Participants volunteered at events focusing on support for veterans, neighborhood improvement projects, health promotion, environmental initiatives, education, economic opportunity, and more. This year, volunteer projects were open to the public for participation.

On February 23, Broward College honored the participating organizations with an awards ceremony. Each organization was recognized for their efforts, and Dillard High School was honored for the most volunteers registered and the most hours logged. Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded 96 service projects and logged more than 34,801 volunteer hours in Broward County.
