For the third year in a row, Broward College is hosting the Festival of Music, Film, Literature, & Art (MFLA) with events scheduled at its Judson A. Samuels South Campus and Miramar West Center. The programming includes author talks, poetry readings, movie screenings and more. Founded in January 2015 by the English and journalism faculty, MFLA attempts to build community by way of themed events and specialty lectures that demonstrate the intellectual, artistic, and professional impact of Humanities in the community. Attendees will have the chance to bid on various artistic creations with proceeds benefiting the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. The paintings, installations, ceramics, sculptures and other pieces on auction were donated by faculty, students, and local emerging artists. The exhibit runs through May 8. The “Future Environments” Visiting Artist Series continues with Tiffany Trenda, who will host a free lecture on the relationship between art and technology. The theme for the series is STEAM (Art +STEM/Art Across disciplines). Trenda is a new media performance artist who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of California Los Angeles, Design and Media Arts program. The “Future Environments” Visiting Artist Series continues with Soo Sunny Park, who will host a free lecture on the relationship between art and geometry. Park is a Korea born artist who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from Columbus College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts in Bloomfield Hills. Broward College Supporting Participation and Readiness of Kids in STEM (SPARKS)
Broward College was awarded a $14,150 grant by the Bosch Community Fund for its Supporting Participation and Readiness of Kids in STEM (SPARKS) program, which uses informal learning activities to increase interest in STEM careers among low-income and minority elementary school students. Thanks to the grant, the institution purchased a geodesic dome for interactive learning. The dome was built by Broward College students and faculty, and hosted more than a dozen fifth graders from Broward Estates Elementary in the Science for Kids program. The students spent time in and around the dome working on math and sciences exercises. In April, another two dozen eight graders will visit from Crystal Lake Community Middle School in Pompano Beach, FL.

Broward College was recognized today in Washington, D.C. as a Finalist with Distinction for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s preeminent recognition of high achievement and performance in America’s community colleges. The institution was selected from 1,000 public community colleges nationwide. The $1 million Aspen Prize awards institutions for their outstanding outcomes in four areas: student learning; certificate and degree completion; employment and earnings; and high levels of access and success for minority and low-income students.
