Broward College Hosts Inaugural Agriculture and STEM Expo and Month-Long Activities to Celebrate Earth Day

Davie, FL. (April 12, 2017) More than 300 people attended the inaugural Broward College Agriculture and Science Expo held on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie, Fla. on Saturday, April 8. The Expo kicked off a series of activities planned throughout the month to mark Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22.

 Celebrated under the theme – Recycle, Reduce, Reuse –  activities focused on showing patrons ways in which they could reuse everyday items such as glass and plastic bottles for art and décor. There were also demonstrations on healthy eating and growing organic foods, and a number of special activities for children including an animal petting zoo, play area, and short video presentations.

 Patrons were feted to food, entertainment, interactive presentations and giveaways. Among the exhibitors were the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC), Marando Farms and the Humane society, Cry of the Water, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, university, college and high school environment clubs.

 The Expo was organized by the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs with funding from a grant provided from the National Science Foundation (NSF). “Events like these demonstrate our partnership and commitment to supporting critical initiatives for our community,” said Dr. David Serrano, program manager of the Environmental Sciences program, who organized the event. “We always are looking for ways to raise awareness among our students and Broward County residents to live sustainable lives.”  

  Other initiatives to mark Earth Day include, a Beach Clean Up, Environmental film festivals, an ecosystem tour, student project displays on environmental research and presentations.
