Broward College's President Armstrong Appointed to IIE's CIES Advisory Board for the Fullbright Scholar Program

Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 26, 2017) – Broward College announced that its president, J. David Armstrong, Jr., recently was appointed to the Institute of International Education (IIE) Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) Advisory Board for the Fulbright Scholar Program. President Armstrong was formally inducted on June 26 at its board meeting in Washington, DC.

Advisory Board Chair Harris Pastides, president of the University of South Carolina, said, “We value the perspective that President Armstrong brings to the Fulbright Program, as the leader of one of the largest and most diverse institutions in America, with more than 63,000 students across 12 campuses and centers in South Florida. His more than 32 years of experience as a state and national leader in higher education and economic development position him well to connect the priorities of the Fulbright Program with the interests of faculty and academic leadership at different types of institutions across the country and around the world.”

IIE’s CIES Advisory Board is comprised of academic leaders from institutions around the United States, as well as representatives of the four academic organizations that collaborated to form the Council for International Exchange of Scholars when Fulbright was founded 70 years ago: American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and American Council on Education (ACE). CIES has fostered strong relationships with colleges and universities across the world and collaborated with Fulbright Commissions in 49 countries and 90 U.S. diplomatic posts.

The 12 member CIES Advisory Board provides strategic direction to the Fulbright Scholar Program by providing expertise and perspectives on U.S. higher education; identifying best practice standards; and serving as an advocate to the Program by providing connections and ongoing exchange of information and ideas.

Fulbright is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends American scholars, artists, faculty, and professionals abroad to lecture and/or conduct research for up to a year. The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program provides grants to approximately 900 foreign scholars from over 100 countries to conduct post-doctoral research at U.S. institutions from an academic semester to a full academic year. The Fulbright Student Program offers college seniors, graduate students, and young adults the opportunity to study, conduct research and/or teach abroad.

The IIE convenes the CIES Advisory Board bi-annually to help connect the international academic community to the Fulbright Scholar Program, which is overseen by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
