Broward College is Now Accepting Applications from Community Organizations to Participate In 2018 MLK Day Of Service

Fort Lauderdale, FL (September 28, 2017) – Through funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has received $185,000 for the development and completion of service projects between January 8 - January 15, 2018. MLK Day of Service encourages the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy.

Interested organizations are encouraged to detail how their proposed projects will enhance or impact the Broward County community and submit applications through the  Broward College MLK Day of Service website. The selected organizations will be eligible to receive awards up to $5,000 to directly support their proposed service projects. Applications are due on Wednesday, October 25. Selected projects will then send representatives to attend a mandatory project orientation workshop on Thursday, November 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

"For the 4th year, Broward College has partnered with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to help increase the role community activism and philanthropy play in the lives of students and residents in Broward County," said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. "Our efforts are bearing fruit and we continue to see increased participation each year. We are eager to begin receiving new proposals for MLK Day of Service projects and continue our dedication to volunteerism into 2018."

Last year, more than 3,100 volunteers registered for projects, a 15 percent increase from 2016, logged 16,045 hours of service. The MLK Day of Service awards are intended to encourage service projects which address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families' issues, public safety or neighborhood projects.

Eligible applicants include non-profits, volunteer groups, K-12 schools, colleges/universities, government organizations, Greek/civic/service organizations, churches, neighborhood organizations, professional associations and for-profit businesses. All participating organizations and service projects must be located in Broward County.
