Broward College Gives Back to the Community with MLK Day of Service Awards 2018

MLK Day of Service honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with various volunteer opportunities on January 15

Fort Lauderdale, Fla (November 27, 2017) – The Florida Legislature and Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has allocated funds to 42 different community organizations to develop and complete service projects. Now in its fourth year, the Broward College MLK Day of Service program received 72 applications for project funding, a 16 percent increase from 2017.

Broward College received monies for the development and completion of service projects. Each selected organization was eligible to receive up to $5,000 in funding for proposed events. The 2018 service projects will focus on support for veterans, neighborhood improvement projects, health promotion, environmental initiatives, education, and more.

"We are committed to fostering volunteerism and community service in our students, staff, and faculty," said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. "Our partnership with the MLK Advisory Board offers excellent projects and solidify our ongoing relationship with our community."

MLK Day of Service encourages the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded 138 service projects. The 2017 service projects hosted more than 3,100 volunteers, a 15 percent increase from 2016, and logged 16,045 hours of service. 

The public is invited to participate in one of these volunteer projects by registering on the Broward College MLK Day of Service website . The 2018 MLK Day of Service events will be held from January 8 through January 15, 2018.
