South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall Presents Anat Cohen Quartet

Anat has been voted Clarinetist of the Year nine years in a row by the Jazz Journalists Association

Davie, Fla. (April 9, 2018) – The Anat Cohen Quartet, helmed by the player voted by the Jazz Journalists Association as Clarinetist of the Year nine years in a row, will appear in the "South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall" series on Saturday, April 21 at 8 p.m.  Ron's "15 Jazz Discussion" by South Florida JAZZ President & Artistic Director Ronald B. Weber precedes the show at 7:45 p.m.

As The New Yorker reported, Anat Cohen "displays a pan-historical, pan-cultural approach to jazz" and the Anat Cohen Quartet program is a unique blend of modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango and an expansive timeline of Afro-Cuban styles.

Born in Tel Aviv and raised into a musical family, Cohen attended the finest Israeli schools before matriculating at Boston's Berklee College of Music. She began studying clarinet at age 12 and later tenor sax, as jazz captured her imagination and she explored Sidney Bechet to Sonny Rollins. Cohen has topped both the Critics and Readers Polls in the clarinet category in DownBeat magazine every year since 2011.

The Wall Street Journal raved, "What's not to love about a young clarinetist and saxophonist who plays everything we love—modern jazz, world music, "hot" New Orleans style jazz—and does it all brilliantly?"

Anat has toured the world with her quartet, headlining at the Newport, Umbria, SF Jazz and North Sea jazz festivals as well as at such revered venues as New York's Village Vanguard (where she was the first Israeli headliner) and Columbia University's prestigious Miller Theatre.

"We are thrilled to partner with South Florida JAZZ to bring this acclaimed artist to South Florida in what has been a remarkable season of musical exploration and celebration," said Dr. Dan Barnard, Broward College associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall. "
